Blog Quest 2: Design your game item

The objective of this quest is to design an item and explain in detail how it can change the game and what new mechanics it enables. I am really excited about this quest because I always have a mind of a designer and wonder how can I make the games I like more fun to play with. In this quest I will share an idea of an item for League of Legends that can change the gameplay and enable new mechanics and strategies.

"Almost instant-kill Potion: When the player consumes this potion, he/she can deal 99% of the current health of the opponent that is in his/her vision radius with any source of damage (Vision radius extended by turrets or minions does not count and will not trigger the effect of this item). This cooldown has 1 minute."

The item that I am going to introduce is the almost instant-kill potion. It is an item that once the players buy it at the store, they automatically consume it and it lasts forever until the game is over no matter how many times the players die. The item might seem over-powered to most of the L.O.L. players, but the more I thought about it, the more fun things this item can bring to the table.

To begin with, I am aiming to put this item in 5v5 map. Usually, players tend to eliminate their opponents through farming, secure objectives such as dragon or baron, teamfight/gank, placing wards to get map control, destroy turrets and eventually destroy their base. However, my new item will bring big changes in this map. Assuming all players on both teams consume this item at the beginning, the early laning phase can remain the same. However, it would be a little bit different for junglers as they have to farm, gank, and now also have to worry about being discovered by the other team. There are many champions in League of Legends that have skills to provide vision on the map, for example, Caitlyn and Nidalee's trap, Shaco's trick box, Maokai's sappling, and many more; some of them can see the opponents without letting them notice. Besides scouting, many champions have the ability to chase, escape, interrupt or change other champions' motion, which can enable a new hide-and-seek mechanics in this game. Players would attempt to extend their visions and eliminate the opponents' as much as possible, and this is where the gameplay happens.

The fog of war, the invisible part on the map, is the biggest protection of players in this situation. Some champions have global skills, which could become very powerful when using them with wards together. So, I will explain how wards would work with this new item to make the game balance.

Let's say we have Ashe and Teemo on the map, Ashe has placed serveral wards on the map and have vision of where Teemo is but Teemo has no idea where Ashe is. In this situation, Ashe has an advantage to significantly damage Teemo with her ultimate. However, the vision players gain from the wards or champion's skills has to connect to the enemy in order to trigger the effect of the new item. Therefore, base on the above circumstances, Ashe can only deal regular damage to Teemo.

In order to use the effect of the item, all the visions have to connect together from player to the enemy. In the above image, Ashe's ultimate will trigger the item's effect

....and vice versa. If Teemo has the wards connected the vision from him to the enemy, Ashe will 99% of her current health instantly when she steps on Teemo's shroom and the poison will pick up a kill for Teemo. Be aware that in this scenario, it only works when Teemo has extended vision directly to the enemy in order to use the item.

If any other champion replaces Teemo on the above image, it will not trigger the items and Ashe will only receive damage from the shroom normally.

Now that the new items are introduced and with 116 champions in the game, there will be lots of new strategy and conflict in the game. Hopefully, there are sufficient details about this item and how it can alter the gameplay and bring in new mechanic into the game, so I can share how excited I feel about this item and the consequences of using it.
