Intermediate Computer Graphic: Stage 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmkriySllxw

A Case of the Mondays is a student project developed by One Big System studio. It is a third person shooting game with themes of sci-fi and horror. The very first version is released in December, 2012 with the use of simple computer graphics. Within 5 minutes, players can explore the first template of the level, understand how to play and how the game works. Above link is the trailer of A Case of the Mondays.

As the new semester begins, One Big System studio will be taking shader into account, improving the graphics and polishing the game up. In this blogpost, I will use Photoshop and edit some screenshots, attmpt to forecast the possibilities that we might improve or present the graphics in the game.

In this screenshot, I add a layer of black to darken the scene, then apply a blend mode on it, so it would not change the look of the scene. Then i add another layer of green on the monitor and apply outer glow to it. This would give a much better atmosphere and better look in the scene. As there is light from the monitor, it would make sense to have light hits on the ground and casts shadow. So I add another layer of green in an oval shape and put it where it should be and add another layer of shadow to strengthen the atmosphere. To make it more interesting, I use the graphic pen filter to make lines on the monitor and the light that reflects on the ground to make it more realistic and looks digital. Lastly, I use another filter, glowing edge, on the whole screenshot and blend it with the original one, so that things would have glow in colours.

In this screenshot, I also add a layer of black to darken the scene because I think it is essential to make the game looks more scary and mysterious. Then I add shadow to the character and the enemies so they would look like they exist in the scene rather than just things flowing around on the screen. Instead of making long shadow for each enemy, I notice it would easier and faster for the system to run if I just cast the shadow underneath of each enemy; it would take less calculation this way. The enemies would still be affected by the light from the character so it would still look realistic. In order to capture the attention of players easier, I add a red circle on the eye of the enemies and apply an outer glow effect on each of them. So they would look more scary, stand out more from the dark background, and players can easily identify the unfriendly enemies.  I also try to apply a texture on the ground so it would look like it has a bump map texture on it.

This is an image I find online and simply place it on top of the floor with a blend mode. Lastly, I try another filter fragment to pixelate the layer in different directions and apply a blend mode to it. This effect blurs out the scene by a little and gives a different feeling to the scene which I find it very interesting.

In this screenshot, again, I make the scene darker especially the area behind the player where the flashlight cannot reach. Then I attempt other effects to see to see if it is better.

I use the above image of a piece of metal and place it underneath the character, adjust it to an angle with distort and apply blend mode on it. Therefore, it would be easier to bring the focus onto the character in a dark scene and has a more feeling of sci-fi. This can also be apply to the chair on the top right corner of the screenshot. If there is object that the character can interact with, it would be best to have a outer glow on the object to make it more noticeable and stands out from other non-interactable objects. The glowing circle around the object also helps to get attention of the object. Lastly, I use the filter texturizer to create lines on the scene so it would look more sci-fi, a more digital atmosphere on the screen.

To be continue....
